Our 1 hour weekly youth theatre classes are designed to build confidence in 12-18 year olds through drama techniques. This includes spontaneous improvisation, mini scripts, theatre games, radio plays, monologues and structured scenes.

With over 44 years of experience, our specially trained teachers and curriculum can help develop public speaking skills to help students feel empowered in educational and social aspects of life. Working within a structured curriculum, our students develop public speaking skills, improve their self-esteem and confidence, and foster enthusiasm and a positive approach to life.

Our Youth Theatre groups also provide a relaxed space to make friends, try new things, and have fun!

Our specially written curriculum and specialist teacher training ensures our students have a balanced, fun-filled lesson every week. Although the structure remains the same each week, each lesson is different and, with the different age groups offered, a child can join the Academy at five years of age and stay until they are 18 without ever repeating a lesson.

The Academy year for each age group is made up of three terms, each term concentrates on developmental drama that builds your child’s confidence throughout the year with the final term culminating in a staged performance.

“My drama class gave me the confidence and life skills that I needed to apply to my dream university. Each class was full of fun, professional drama activities and I made many friends along the way. I could always be myself and never feel judged.”

Why do drama classes matter?

Drama classes are not just about performing on stage. They offer a range of benefits that can positively impact a child’s development.

Drama Kids: Developing confidence, communication and creativity

CONFIDENCE

Drama classes provide a space for children to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them. This helps to build their confidence and self-esteem, which can translate into other areas of their lives.

COMMUNICATION

Drama classes help children learn how to express themselves clearly and effectively. They learn how to listen to others and respond appropriately, as well as how to use body language and tone of voice to convey meaning. The students will learn to work as a team, including how to compromise, work together and support each other.

CREATIVITY

Drama classes encourage children to think outside the box and explore their imaginations. They learn how to create characters, develop storylines, and use props and costumes to bring their ideas to life.

Our Approach

At our drama classes for Youth Theatre students, we believe in a student-centered approach. We provide a supportive and inclusive environment where children can feel safe to express themselves and take risks.

Our experienced teachers use a range of techniques to help children develop their skills and creativity. We use improvisation, role-playing, and script work to help children build their confidence and communication skills. We also encourage children to bring their own ideas and creativity to the classes.

Benefits of our Programme

In 1979 Helen O’Grady, a trained drama teacher and actress, recognised a need for young children to develop their confidence and self-esteem and to improve their verbal communication skills.

Now, many years later, when we all rely so much on technology and communicate mostly through messages, emails and social media, that need has never been greater.

Our fun-packed lessons, for all age groups, instil, firstly in children, the beauty of the spoken word. They enable young people to have something to say, the confidence to say it and the creativity to make it interesting.

Ongoing attendance in the programme develops individuals at their own rate, in so many ways and allows them to carry their new found skills seamlessly into ‘real life’. There is no doubt it is the confident, well-spoken and interesting candidate who will impress the panel/ the school board/ the interviewers/ the audience. These are skills which can be learnt and learnt while having fun and making new friends.

“I would highly recommend this class”

My daughter attends Drama Kids in St. Helens. Since joining, her confidence has grown and she looks forward to her lesson each week. Her lovely teacher, Andrea, has nothing but praise for her and is leading her into becoming a talented drama student. I would highly recommend this class.

Luca had a wonderful time! He has always had an amazing imagination and it has always amazed me the lengths he goes to. I am so glad he enjoyed yesterday, he really cannot wait to return next week. He is already thinking about costumes he has that he can wear! Thank you.

Parent

Thank you for being instrumental in improving Tamsyn's confidence and for the great opportunities she has had in the shows. She has REALLY enjoyed herself. She is looking forward to the opportunities Redland High will give her for drama and I know she will enjoy herself all the more because of the grounding you have given her.

Parent

My children attend Drama Kids Derbyshire and I am overwhelmed by everything the academy has given my children; confidence, fun, memories, excitement and belief in themselves. Thank you so much!

Parent

Thank you Drama Kids: Our son has been going to the academy for a number of years and what a difference it has made to his speech and confidence. Our boy is 11 and has oral dyspraxia, which affects his ability to speak clearly and his short term memory. He loves his drama and is very outgoing. He wants to get involved in the drama lessons and annual plays that his primary school put on, but has been held back because of his dyspraxia and has never had a speaking part. Drama Kids has been awesome, the staff are so helpful and understanding of our son's difficulty and he has always had a proper speaking part, even during the early years. Thank you Drama Kids for helping our son thrive and grow into a confident young man.

Parent

In school assemblies and plays, my son, Stefan was usually relegated to the background. He was bright but lacked the confidence to speak up and be heard. Since being at the academy, Stefan has bloomed and consequently had major parts in each successive school assembly. Thank you so much for instilling in my son the confidence to let his voice be heard and his presence be felt. Such confidence will be invaluable as he grows up and will help to prepare him for every aspect of life.

Parent

I am very grateful to be working with such positive people. The family of Drama Kids is spread so far and wide. How wonderful knowing we are all linked together by our passion to help children develop and believe in themselves through are stunning curriculum.

Alison Mazanec

Thank you for everything. In 10 years you have changed me from a shy young boy to a confident young man.

Through the programme thousands and thousands of young people find their voice, generate self-belief, become generous participants in life and experience much fun and fulfilment along the way!
